Do You Need a Building Permit?
PLEASE NOTE: Many Port Barrington residents are members of Homeowners Associations; therefore residents may need approval from their Homeowners Association Board prior to applying for permits.
A permit is NOT required for the following:
- Ordinary maintenance and minor repair
- Soffit, fascia, decorative trim and gutters
- Replacement windows and doors of the same size
- Painting, masonry tuck pointing and repair
- Replacement of electrical appliances, fixtures, switches and receptacle outlets
- Replacement of plumbing fixtures
- Interior finish materials, painting and decoration
- Exterior plantings, gardens, and retaining walls that are less than 4’ in height
A permit IS required for the following:
- Any new construction, additions or remodeling
- Electrical wiring and distribution equipment
- Relocating or replacing any plumbing supply, drain, waste, vent or gas piping
- HVAC equipment and water heater replacement
- Installation of a fireplace or wood stove
- Siding Replacement
- Moving walls or windows
- Finishing a basement or an attic open space
- Driveways, patios, decks, walks and fencing
- Storage Sheds
- Reroofing of residential buildings
